Acoustic Wedding CD - Gear List and Recording Approach
I play a Takamine dreadnought
acoustic/electric, for both live and recording. I've had it a long time
and plays well. Before the recording started, I had it re-fretted, as
well as a full neck and bridge setup to keep the intonation as steady as
possible all the way up the neck.
My gear for the CD was a very lean signal path for purity and
simplicity. I used 2 large condenser mics; an AKG C414 B-ULS, and a Rode NT2,
a Langevin DVC mic
preamp, Apogee Rosetta A/D Converter, Yamaha AW-16G 16-track hard disk
workstation. I mixed down using onboard Yamaha EQ & effects, then on to mastering and duplication.
The songs were recorded with two mics,
the AKG C414 about 6" from the 12th fret, and the Rode NT2 was about 8
inches away between the sound hole and the end of the guitar body. I
recorded and mixed as a stereo pair, giving more space to recording a
solo instrument. Most melody lines were multi-tracked to be able to
reflect more parts in these classical pieces, and achieve greater
smoothness in the sound of the songs. In essence, the songs present more
like a guitar duet.
